Forum: GratefulDead Subject: sophies choice- Encore Song

this question harkens back to my old style of mind exercises-

Here is the hard choice you have to make- Pick the one song that was predominantly used in the encore slot that you would have preferred to be in the normal heavy rotation.

Cool. Now you have it- but now sophie must give up another heavy rotation song- but one she loves- and that song must be relegated to the encore slot.

The trade must be jerry for jerry or bobby for bobby

For me- after hearing 9/15/85 us blues out of space is us blues! I am going to trade Bertha for this- a song which was great anywhere in the set- but i think i could have lived with it as an encore only song

I was lucky enough to catch Saturday Night as an opener(Sat Night > Fire http://www.archive.org/details/gd85-07-13.sbd.georges.372.sbefail.shnf )

and Good Love twice as an encore 1) At the Garden in '79 (http://www.archive.org/details/gd79-01-07.aud.vernon.16467.sbeok.shnf ) and 2) as the second encore at the greek 9-12-81. Unfortunately the Greek show is missing the second encore here on the archives.

Lets take Black Muddy River and drop it in the first set with songs like To Lay Me Down and Althea and following Liams lead I'm shoving Bertha/Good Lovin' into the encore spot.

Jack Straw for Johnny B Goode.

Nothing wrong with a good John B, but a ripping Jack Straw, with the Dead's signature on it, and with both Jerry and Bob taking vocal leads, would have left me more satisfied.

I would have liked to see Baby Blue as a first set, or pre-jam 2nd set song. As far as encore. I also think Wharf Rat would have been very appropriate for the encore....."I'll Get Up And Fly Away....Fly Away"

Also I saw Cold Rain as an encore one time, and I always thought I would have liked to see that again.
